The entire legal fraternity in St Kitts and Nevis, senior government officials, and civil society bade farewell to Justice Trevor, after his tenure as the judge of St Kitts and Nevis High Court, during a ceremony held on July 25, Monday. The ceremony bidding farewell to Justice Trevor was held at the “Police Training Complex” in Basseterre.
“I stand on this occasion to honour the sterling service of Justice Trevor Ward, QC as Resident High Court Judge.” Vincent Byron Jr, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Legal Affairs et al., spoke at the ceremony.
“My Lord, on behalf of the Government and people of the Federation, I extend our sincere thanks for your service as a judicial officer here in St Kitts and Nevis over these past six (6) years, both as High Court Judge for the criminal assizes and more recently as the Civil Court Judge,” he added further.
Attorney-General Byron noted that Justice Ward arrived in St Kitts and Nevis at a most critical and reasonable time. His arrival coincided with a time when the jurisdiction saw a backlog of criminal cases, which necessitated the creation of a second High Court Chamber, entrusted with the responsibility to cope with the growing number of cases.
He added that the arrival of Justice Ward immediately improved the service of justice within the Federation. He took on the criminal assizes, which used to suffer interruptions when only one resident judge was stationed on the St Kitts Circuit.
Minister Byron described Justice Ward as a distinguished gentleman who has served the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis exceptionally well. The duration of Justice Trevor M ward was short. Still, Attorney-General Byron believes that the measure of an individual’s effectiveness is not the length of their time in the office they occupy but rather the contributions they have made while in that office.
QC Ward succeeded Trinidadian Justice Marlene Ida Carter, who resigned as High Court Judge effective August 15, 2016, from the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC). Justice Trevor M. Ward QC swore into his position on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at a small but significant ceremony at Government House as the resident High Court Judge.
