The Social Security Board of St. Christopher and Nevis, which is one of the nation’s most important foundations of prosperity and has assets over $1.7 billion, making it the most secure in the Eastern Caribbean, has grown by $350 million in the last five years.
The Hon Eugene Hamilton, the Federal Minister in Charge of Social Security, made the remark on Sunday, January 30 at the Bethesda Moravian Church in Cayon, where Board Members, Management, and Staff had gathered for collective worship in honour of the organization’s 44th anniversary.
“You can look back to 1978, when Social Security was established, because that year saw the economic transformation that provided a social protection mechanism for ordinary poor people,” the Hon Hamilton said, pointing to events that shaped and sustained the country’s economic transformation, growth, development, and stability over time. “Let us express our gratitude to those who, in 1978, had the foresight to establish Social Security.”
Dr. Timothy Harris, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Her Excellency Dr. Thelma Phillip-Browne, Ambassador of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United States of America, and Mr. Valentine Lindsay, Special Advisor to the Ministries under Hon Hamilton’s docket, were among those who attended the corporate worship service.
Mr Frank Farrell, Mrs Candice Caines-Dickenson, and Mr Lennox Liburd were among the members of the Board of Directors of Social Security who attended the morning corporate worship service, which was led by Rev Erwin Warner. Management and Staff were led by Social Security Director, Mr Antonio Maynard.
Minister Hamilton stated, “This is an institution with assets over $1.7 billion, making it the most sound in the Eastern Caribbean, with growth of $350 million in the last five years.” “In the last five years, Social Security has grown by $350 million.”
During the coronavirus pandemic, the St. Christopher and Nevis Social Security Board braved itself and paid out $23 million to the people of the Federation, according to Hon Hamilton, who is also the Minister for National Health Insurance, Ecclesiastical Affairs, Social Development, and Gender Affairs.
