St Kitts and Nevis celebrated World Mental Health Day on Monday, October 10, 2022. This year, the twin islands have decided to prioritize the mental health of the nation’s people.

The administrative heads, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew and Premier Mark Brantley of St Kitts and Nevis, took to their respective social media accounts to commemorate the occasion. Both leaders extended their greetings to the people.

Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew took to his Facebook to greet the nationals and educate them on the significance of World Mental Health Day.

He wrote:

World Mental Health Day is celebrated on October 10 each year, and this year it is celebrated under the theme “make mental health for all a global priority”. We must raise awareness of mental health issues and lend support where necessary.

Mental health challenges are some of the most common health issues people face (depression, stress etc.), but the stigma associated with mental health issues is what hinders people from seeking the help they need. We intend to do more to create awareness and sensitivity around mental wellness in our society.

I understand the significance of preserving one’s mental health, and that is why I have prioritized supporting initiatives that promote mental well-being to create a positive environment that empowers and motivates our people.

The idea is to educate our people and make an attitude change that brings awareness to mental wellness through the importance of self-care, paying attention to your diet, exercising, meditating, strive for balance in your life. It is essential to care for your mind, just as it is vital to care for your body.

On the other hand, the Premier of Nevis also shared an update regarding the ongoing celebration and observance of World Mental Health Day on Monday, October 10, 2022.

He took to his Facebook to write:

Something good is happening in Nevis

As we focus on Mental Health this week, I take the opportunity to thank PS Shelisa Martin for allowing me the privilege of touring the new Mental Health facility at Prospect this morning (on world mental health day). This building has been carefully repurposed to act as a stand-alone centre for serving our people who require care.

Further, the premier added that “I was very impressed with what I saw, and I thank the staff for the warm welcome.”

According to Premier Brantley, “Mental health is critical to overall health and well-being, and I urge our people to be kind to each other and to be our brothers’ keepers and our sister’s helpers.
