Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: The Minister of Sports of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, Samal Duggins, has highlighted the importance of physical activity and sports in the life of a person.
He mentioned that physical activity plays an important role in overall well-being. This statement was delivered by the Minister during the celebration of International Olympic Day on June 23, 2023.
As the nation joined the world in celebrating International Olympic Day, the Sports Minister of St Kitts and Nevis addressed the general public. During this nationally televised address, Minister stated that this year’s theme, “Let’s Move”, is perfectly fitting as it is encouraging active movement.
Sports Minister further added that on this day, he encourages the general public to do some other type of physical activity. He asked the public to add an activity such as brisk, walking, running or playing any sports.
He said, “Our nation must be physically active as this will assist with ensuring a healthy population.” He further praised Olympic Games as a global sporting event that attracts the attention of sports lovers across the world every four years. Minister Samal Duggins regarded the event as a celebration of sports.
In addition to this, he mentioned that it is a platform which promotes important values, including excellence, respect and friendship. Minister further mentioned that all these values are regarded as essential building blocks, leading to a better and peaceful world.
Minister of Sports Duggins was quoted saying, “The Olympics have also been instrumental in promoting gender equality and breaking down racial barriers.”
He added, “It has provided opportunities for women to participate in sports and compete at the highest level. The games have also served as a platform for athletes to take a stand against discrimination and promote social justice.”
On this occasion, he also asked the general public to come forward and extend full support to the local athletes and encourage the youth of St Kitts and Nevis to “take up sports and lead a healthy and active lifestyle.”
