St Kitts and Nevis: The St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party has addressed the issue of short storage and has made expanding storage capacity to reduce the losses of post harvest and ensuring food security.
Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, et al., Samal Duggins posted the glimpses of the new storage facilities through his official social media and noted, “Revolutionizing Agriculture: Expanding Storage, Reducing Losses, Ensuring Food Security.”
Minister Duggins shared that back in 2022, the St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) led government identified that 60% of the food that was produced was being lost post-harvest which posed a major and serious challenge to food security and economic growth.
To address this issue and overcome these challenges, the government made expanding storage capacity a national priority as a vital part of the solution.
As the empowerment of farmers through fostering sustainable farming practices leads to increased product activity, the Ministry of Agriculture recognised the need for improved infrastructural support.
As part of this comprehensive approach to agriculture, the concerned department has been making strides with the installation of two ultramodern storage chills at the Tabernacle Outreach Centre. The installation of these chills will significantly bolster storage capacity ensuring that the agricultural products are stored and distributed efficiently to meet market demands.
With the installation of these modern storage chills and additional 15 chills ordered, the government is significantly enhancing the ability to reduce spoilage, maintain product quality, and meet market demands. This will also be placed across the island according to a plan, making them accessible to farmers in all regions.
This facility will also ensure that famers can supply fresh, high-quality produce with consistency to supermarkets, restaurants, and hotels while supporting their growth and sustainability.
As the government addresses the post-harvest losses, a resilient agricultural sector is being built that empowers farmers, strengthens food security, and drives economic progress for St Kitts and Nevis.
