Residents of The La Guerite North Housing Development were presented with their Certificate of Title (COT) at a simple but significant ceremony held at the National Emergency Management (NEMA) Conference Room. The ceremony took place on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, thus officially advancing their desire to become land owners.
A Certificate of Title (COT) is a legal document issued by the government that indicates proof of real or personal property ownership.
Elreter Simpson-Browne, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sustainable Development, said that the idea of officially owning a piece of land is a dream come true for many.
“Having the title to the land is one part; the other part is being able to live and raise your children and grandchildren in an atmosphere that is befitting with all amenities required for comfortable living,” said PS Simpson-Browne.
She added that more than 40 residents will receive their COT today, Wednesday, July 27 2022, while the rest of the residents will be given approval letters.
Further, she stated that The Department of Lands and Surveys is working diligently to get the work done while indicating that the rest will be done between Thursday and Friday.
PS Simpson-Browne encouraged the official land owners to cherish the area and attempt to make it the best place to live in.
Permanent Secretary, Simpson-Browne added that she recognizes that this is what the residents of The La Guerite North Housing Development have been waiting for. She insisted that this development belongs to the residents and urged them to take pride in accepting it and taking care of it so that it can be sustained for future generations.
Akilah Byron-Nisbett, The Minister of Health et al., and the Representative of the Parliament from Constituency Three (3) vowed to continue working for the people of La Guerite and the entire constituency.
At the event, she assured the people of their continued support and hard work to make sure that the people may get the development in La Guerite that they deserve in La Guerite. She added that they would make sure that everybody in La Guerite was well-taken care of.
In 2021, the Government of St Kitts and Nevis, through the Ministry of Sustainable Development, decided to offer discounted land rates, interest-free, to approximately 90 residents who reside on properties at La Guerite Extension without title right or lease.
In order to maintain a beautiful surrounding and ensure that value of the property increases in the future, owners will not be permitted to fence their properties with galvalume. No resident will be permitted to breed goats, sheep, or pigs in the area. However, the residents were encouraged to engage in backyard gardening and/or farming.
