St. George, Grenada: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew visited Carriacou in Grenada to assess the damage following the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl. The Category 4 hurricane made huge destruction on some Caribbean Island nations.
The Hurricane Beryl made landfall on islands of Carriacou, Petite Martinique, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines on July 1, 2024, causing huge destruction.
Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Terrance Drew joined by other Caribbean leaders, including Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit and Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J. Pierre arrived in Carriacou, Grenada on July 10, 2024.
The delegation made a visit to assess the damage and evaluate the affected communities. The leaders also made an effort to coordinate regional support and relief efforts.
PM Drew expressed his concern for the citizens of the country of Grenada and the neighbouring islands. He stated that the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the region to natural disasters.
He also extended sympathy and support towards the families struck by the impact of the hurricane. “Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones and those whose homes and livelihoods have been destroyed. We are committed to providing immediate and sustained support to help rebuild and recover,” expressed PM Drew.
The Prime Ministers also interacted with the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell to discuss on urgent necessities and the best ways to deliver assistance. The visit of the delegation outlines the importance of the regional solidarity and cooperation at times of such unfortunate events.
The island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, and Saint Lucia have also mobilised resources to enhance the recovery of Grenada. PM Dr Drew also said this collaborative support aims to ensure that aid is provided swiftly and effectively to those in need.
The ministers also underscored the strength of the Grenadian people, applauding their spirit of unity and determination in such times.
“Together, we will rebuild stronger and more resilient communities. The Caribbean stands united in support of Grenada during this challenging time,” added PM Terrance Drew.
