St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew delivered a presentation at the Pre-COP29 Youth Forum, hosted by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action & Constituency Empowerment on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
This significant Youth Forum was held at the Royal St Kitts Hotel and Prime Minister Drew addressed the primary and secondary school students stressing on the impacts of climate change as the residents of small island states.
Prime Minister Drew shared glimpses of the Pre-COP29 Youth Forum on his official Facebook account and noted that he has an opportunity to deliver a presentation and to interact with the young people from across the Federation.
Addressing the youth of the nation, PM Drew urged the young people to become strong advocates for climate justice and adaptation. He also mentioned how all the leaders of the government of small island states are doing all in their power to combat the impacts of climate change through global outreach.
He also urged them to introspect and look into their infinite creative abilities to ask the entire world to change its course of destructive action on the climate and the environment and to be more responsible.
Creative abilities such as arts, paintings, poetry, et al., can help allow the voices of the youth be heard on the issue of the climate change.
The discussions and various sessions were led by a panel of youth leaders from St. Kitts and Nevis, and saw participation from Government Leaders including Education Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley; Minister of Sustainable Development Dr Joyelle Clarke, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Isalean Phillip.
The Prime Minister expressed his delight with the response of the students and stated that he was quite pleased and filled with hope by the positive and thoughtful contributions of the youth on this issue.
Notably, the Pre-COP29 Youth Forum served to introduce the nation’s youth to the government’s ambitious goal of transforming St Kitts and Nevis into a Sustainable Island State by 2035. The objective of the government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA) is to ensure that there is a future for young people to inherit and prosper.
“We must all fight for a sustainable island state, both for now and future generations,” mentioned PM Dr Terrance Drew.
