Prime Minister and Health Minister, Dr Terrance Drew declared that the first-ever Emergency Room (ER) Specialist has been appointed at the Joseph N. France (JNF) General Hospital. He made the announcement in the May edition of “The Roundtable.”
The ER specialist is also expected to begin working in St Kitts and Nevis from June 18, 2025. His appointment is an important milestone in enhancing healthcare services in the Federation and another step in the continued evolution of healthcare services.
In the Roundtable interview, PM Drew explained that St Kitts and Nevis never previously had a trained expert in emergency services. He said they are in the final stages of hiring an ER expert.
Specifically, the ER specialist will be from the United States and will also serve at JNF General Hospital twice a month. PM Drew also added that the specialist will be conducting training for local ER physicians, putting in place protocols, and will help modernize the department.
Staff Present at the JNF General Hospital
The JNF General Hospital employs in its workforce a neurologist, an endocrinologist, an anesthesiologist, a urologist, a nephrologist, and a general surgeon. The addition of a specialist in the hospital staff aligns with the government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare services in the Federation.
In addition, the twin island nation now has the highest number of medical specialists in its history. The medical staff is well trained, able to deliver quality medical services to the residents of St Kitts and Nevis.
Easy Access to Specialists
Prime Minister Drew explained that the patients are now able to receive specialist treatment at home within less time compared to other nations. He explained that it is only due to the progress the healthcare centers have made in the Federation.
“Right now, we have the shortest wait time in the whole region at that general hospital,” the prime minister declared. He added that if someone has a neurological problem, they can see the neurologist in four or five days and if they have a diabetic problem, they can visit the endocrinologist locally.
