The opposition backed media is using the water supply crisis of Cayon to spread misinformation about the water safety and health concerns. The social media posts that are making these claims have said that the water output of the Cayon water well is unsafe.
The opposition backed social media outlets have claimed that the water is not fit for daily consumption. In support of this claim, the media outlet has claimed that the water is saline and that the water crisis in the community is unsafe.
However, none of these claims are backed by any facts or reports, and come across as politically motivated attacks on the administration. In July, the Prime Minister had invited the people from Cayon to discuss the positive impact of the Cayon well has had on the people’s life.
In this radio show, the guests shared that their lives have been made easier due to the water well. They also said that they were grateful for the efforts of Dr Drew and his team in ensure adequate water supply for the people of the island.
Before the commissioning of the Cayon well nearly two years ago, the structure had gone through intensive tests. These tests were aimed towards making sure that the supply of water given to the general public is safe for consumption.
Less than ten weeks after the radio interview, the opposition has come out with wild claims about the safety of the same water. Moreover, they have not provided any solid proofs to back their claims of salinated water.
Even if the opposition’s claims are taken into account, there is no concrete proof of what amout of salination is dangerous in the definition of this media outlet. Some experts have suggested that some amount of salination is common in coastal water sources and can not be considered unsafe for consumption.
Furthermore, the claims made by the opposition has shared no definite claims with concrete numbers. This is why, the claims of water safety are coming across less as a warning and more like malicious attempt to defame the government.
