Ian Chapman, Crops Programme Leader in the Department of Agriculture, said that the Ministry of Agriculture is moving towards helping farmers obtain water more sustainably.
Mr Chapman said that there are water catchments, but they are damaged. He said they would now be fixed and would be in places with clusters of farmers including four main areas ̶ Parson’s Ground, Whites, Brotherson’s Estate and St. Peter’s.
He said that he thinks those are the four essential places where they would start with.
He said that they know that there are others to be fixed. Still, these are more in a state of being fixed quickly so that they can be fixed before the active rainy season is diminished so that they can store the water so when the rain starts to trickle off in 2021, the farmers can say that they can have sustained production.
He said that hopefully, the work would start by the end of next month on at least four of the dams so that farmers can have water during the dry season as well or when the rain isn’t plentiful.
