The Royal Saint Christopher and Nevis Police Force has shared the 2021-22 comparative Crime Statistics for the final week of the year, week 52. The stat further accompanied last week’s statistics of the complete year
Premier of Nevis, Mark Brantley, reshared the statistics on his social media account, expressing delight that crime has shown a 15% reduction compared to last year. In his new year’s address, Premier Brantley had committed to creating safety nets for the assistance of the elderly, indignant and vulnerable population of Nevis. The 15% reduction in crime statistics is a step in the right direction.
In line with the information, Premier Brantley took to his social media account, stating that he believes that crime is a social problem and requires an all-of-society response to be dealt with correctly.
In the social media post, Premier Mark Brantley has shared that Kitts and Nevis, more specifically, the sister island Nevis has seen a steady decline in crime over the last few years. According to Premier Brantley, the change is due to several interventions from the social security agencies of the two islands.
The initiatives of the government and administrations include the Peace Programme. Further reasons for the noteworthy decrease in crime rates include job growth, significant investment in technology such as CCTV, and excellent police work. However, the most important, according to Premier Mark Brantley, is a change in attitudes as the people of Nevis understand the value of living together in peace.
Premier Brantley further noted that crime of all kinds witnessed a visible reduction since 2021. The only exceptions to the reduction trend are robbery and drug possession cases.
He clarified that in 2021, Nevis saw four registered instances of homicide, and the number came down to a single occurrence in the following year. Similarly, sexual offences also saw a notable reduction from 4 events in 2021 to 1 in 2022. Instances of illegal firearm possession also saw a fall from 6 in 2021 to only a single incident in 2022.
After the detailed analysis, Premier Mark Brantley commended the officials for ensuring the safety and security of the people of Nevis. Those who made the list of receiving the Premier’s gratitude included:
- Nevis High Command and their leader Superintendent James Sutton,
- The contingent of the army stationed on Nevis
- The leadership and staff at the CCTV Command Center
- PS Wakely Daniel
- Ministry of National Security on St Kitts.
Premier Mark Brantley also thanked the people of Nevis for maintaining peace on the island.
