The Honourable Akilah Byron-Nisbett, Minister of Information and Communications Technology, said that it is essential to review policies and legislation as they are key to achieving full digital transformation in St. Kitts and Nevis.
She said that they understand for achieving full digital transformation, they would have to review the key policies and legislation, and so they are in the process of undergoing a review of the current legislation which they would have had in place, many of them are scattered across a number of different legislation.
Minister Byron-Nisbett said that it is important to identify amendments which would allow for the standardization of various regulations including the Interception of Communications Act, the Data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Act and Electronic Crimes.
The Minister added that they also understand that there would be that need for more targeted digital legislation for ensuring that the laws enable the country to transform in a way which would be successful.
She added that in that vein, the government would have tabled recently in the Parliament, the new Electronic Communications Act for helping St Kitts and Nevis to modernize the legislation for the growing electronic communications sector,
The ICT minister said that the Bill intends to replace the Telecommunications Act and provide an upgraded regulatory framework for the ICT and Telecommunications sectors.
Minister Byron-Nisbett said that it is important to note that St. Kitts and Nevis is on a path which would bear fruits.
The Minister said that there is quite a bit that St. Kitts and Nevis is doing. The country has been trying to do some digitization while working towards digital transformation and, they would make sure that the foundation, which is the strategies, are in place.
She said that they have to make sure that the security is in place, but they are moving towards ensuring that once they are digitally transformed, it would be a successful one.
