Veteran Jamaican footballer Leonard Mason took his last breath in Brooklyn, New York on October 31 after years of illness.
Mason, was affectionately called “Chicken” by Jamaican football fans.
He represented Excelsior High School in the Manning Cup football competition in the 1960s, and there the college recruiters noticed his skills.
Later Mason earned scholarships to Century University and Eastern Illinois University where he earned a degree in Accounting as well as an MBA.
Mason played for Santos, Lucas and Real Mona, among others at club level in Jamaica.
In the USA, he represented the Jamaica Ambassadors football teams and Jamaica Nationals.
He was also popularly known for scoring for Jamaica in the first victory of the country (1-0) over Mexico at the National Stadium in 1972.
After he retired from competitive football in 1975, Mason operated his own business as the CEO of LEMS Accounting Services, in Florida and New York.
Later, he became involved in several youth initiatives in Jamaica and was actively participated in fundraising activities at his alma mater.
