Nevis: The Minister of Education in NIA, Troy Liburd officially launched FIFA Football for Schools programme in a ceremony held at the Nevis Disaster Management Department conference room with an aim to promote football in the country.

The FIFA Regional Development Manager, Malaika Church said Nevis is the first Caribbean country to launch such an important programme on a sister island. It reflected the importance of football to all the stakeholders under the St. Kitts and Nevis Association.

While addressing the gathering during the ceremony, Liburd said the event will promote the spirit of football and provide various opportunities to football enthusiasts to realise their potential.

“This means that our coaches in Nevis will get the full benefit of this programme and our young students, our future football stars, young players who have the potential, will have a better opportunity to realise their potential and that is what this programme is all about,” the education minister said.

He further expressed his delight to FIFA that despite of being the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere, it has provided them with an opportunity to showcase their talent. This programme will help them to bring out the talent of football players, who have the potential to go a long way with their sporting skills.

Initially, players in Nevis did not get enough support, yet they managed to develop the sport with their tireless efforts and dedication, however, now they have FIFA and the St. Kitts and Nevis Football Association which will definitely promote football and enable it to grow further.

The programme will organize many workshops and lectures to teach about the strategies and techniques of the football to the coaches and players.

The Minister of Education, Liburd extended a vote of thanks to SKNFA President, Atiba Harris for ensuring that Nevis also receives full benefit of the football programmes, that have been implemented in the Federation. He also commended the collaboration between and the Nevis Island Administration for their collaboration.

SKNFA President Harris stated that Nevis has achieved a milestone by having this programme being individually implemented on its island. He further added that the coaches and the children will have the full advantage of this programme, not just on the playing field but also off the field. They will learn many things about the football, which will help them to move forward in a positive way.

In addition, SKNFA Division 1 season recently held its match on Wednesday at National Bank Group of Companies Technical Centre between Rivers of Living water VS Dieppe Bay at 6 pm.

Another match was played between the teams of Mantab VS Sandy Point at 8 pm.
