The Deputy Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Geoffrey Hanley, is travelling to the Republic of China (Taiwan) for a week-long trip to the country. The country’s Deputy Prime Minister is leading a delegation to the oldest international ally of the government for the first time. Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, conducted a similar delegation to the country in November 2023.
As an extension to this meeting, the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has extended an invitation to the country’s Deputy Prime Minister. Deputy Prime Minister Geoffrey Hanley took to his social media account to share glimpses of the meeting. St Kitts and Nevis started diplomatic relations with the government of Taiwan in 1983. Ever since they have enjoyed strong and long-running ties with one another.
St Kitts and Nevis share a relationship of cooperation and exchanges. Taiwan assists the country in several sectors of the economy, including education, social development, agriculture, medicine and public health, renewable energy, and information and communications technology. Dr Hanley accordingly met with the high-ranking officials of the Taiwan government.
During his meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley met with the Vice President of Taiwan and engaged in fruitful discussions about the development of both the nations in the country. Additionally, he will meet the Minister of foreign affairs, Joseph Wu. The delegation of St Kitts and Nevis consisting of the Minister of public utilities, information, communication and Technology, Konris Maynard, along with Ambassador Kenneth Douglas and Ambassador Leon Natta-Nelson; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Compliance Officer/ Land Officer/ Forestry Ranger in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lisa-Romayne Pistana, and Leonard Lestrade attended the banquet hosted by the Foreign Minister of Taiwan.
In his Facebook post, Deputy Prime Minister Geoffrey Hanley shared that he was honoured to lead the delegation of St Kitts and Nevis to the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Deputy Prime Minister said they visited the Taipei Municipal Wenshan School of Special Education. The principal and his staff warmly greeted the school’s St Kitts and Nevis staff. During the visit, the principal explained the program designed himself, followed by a tour of the facility.
Further, the delegation was treated to one of Taiwan’s most famous sites: The Taipei 101 building. It was, at one point, one of the world’s tallest buildings after leaving the Taipei Municipal Wenshan School of Special Education. The delegation of Dr Geoffrey Hanley also visited several other sites, including a Wind Farm, an electric bus manufacturer, and the National Palace Museum.
