Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Dr Denzil Douglas, who also served as the second prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, attended the OECS Trade Ministers’ meeting. The 4th edition of the Ministerial Meeting took place on Thursday, November 24, 2022. The Organization of the Easter Caribbean States hosted the meeting at the Royalton Hotel in Antigua.

During the meeting, the leaders of the OECS discussed several important issues. The main areas of the discussion centred around the implementation of the Eastern Caribbean Economic Union.

The theme of the ministerial meeting was CONSOLIDATING THE OECS ECONOMIC UNION THROUGH SUSTAINABLE TRADE CAPACITY BUILDING.

The Permanent Secretary in the ministry of trade, Jasmin Weekes, accompanied the Minister of trade and commerce, Dr Denzil Douglas, to the OECS meeting.

The Ministers of the OECS (Organization of the Eastern Caribbean States) indulged in discussions of various issues during the course of their meetings.

The Eastern Caribbean Economic Union, which was one of the most significant issues of discussion, is said to be responsible for addressing the operationalization of the OECS Customs Union, the free circulation of Goods, and implementing the Free Trade in services regime.

Further, the Eastern Caribbean Economic Union works in other areas, such as enhancing trade competitiveness, improving OECS Trade, Transport Logistics, and CSME, especially Article 164 and the Post-Cotonou Development Cooperation Program.

Dr Denzil Douglas believes that these discussions among the trade ministers of the OECS should chart the way forward for the subregion and to advance Trade matters as outlined in the revised Treaty of Basseterre.

The OECS Trade Ministers’ Meeting was attended by the OECS Trade Ministers, Commissioners and Senior Trade Officials.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, commerce et al, Dr Denzil Douglas shared the updates from this meeting on his social media account. He also provided glimpses into the event, by the means of images.
