Eight St Kitts and Nevis students have received scholarships at the Embassy of Cuba. The scholarships were awarded under the government cooperation program in education. Several countries of the Caribbean Community benefit from this scholarship programme. In the 2023 edition, eight students benefitted from the scholarship.
The eight students who received the scholarships were present at the Embassy of Cuba. Five of the eight receivers received scholarships to study Medicine in Cuba. These recipients are Sharon Mwangi, Shianne England, Jonie Williams, Jaquelyn Davis and Ajuma Liburd. Two doctors, Meriskah Phipps and Kha-Lis Farrel, will specialize in Medicine. Dr Meriskah Phipps has chosen the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Additionally, Dr Kha-Lis Farrel is in Anaesthesiology and Reanimation.
The final recipient of the scholarship, Alexandria Richards, will study Physical Education. The eight recipients of the Cuba scholarship will travel to the Republic of Cuba at the end of January. They will pursue their higher education in the country.
The minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Denzil Douglas, took to his social media account to congratulate the eight recipients. He listed all the recipients‘ names and extended his sincere gratitude to the Resident Ambassador, David Rivero, for facilitating the process. He also thanked Hollis Prentice, President of the Cuban Alumni Association.
He wished the students the best for their studies in the overseas. St Kitts and Nevis enjoy a deep and strong relationship with the country. The scholarships offered by the country have benefitted hundreds of students from St Kitts and Nevis since the start of the initiative. The present Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, is also a medical practitioner who received his higher education in the republic of Cuba.
The second Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Denzil Douglas, started the initiative of the scholarship to secure better educational opportunities for the youth of his country.
