The Citizen Security Secretariat hosted the first edition of the Better Opportunity Fairs on Central Street, Basseterre. The fair serves as a platform to get the community together and give them the resources to fight crime.

The organization has promised that they will continue to organise these initiatives for the people of the island to participate in. The Citizen Security Secretariat says that these community-driven events seek to reduce the distance between residents and essential services.

The better opportunity fairs give people access to resources and opportunities that promote positive growth, empowerment, and social upliftment. Participants and facilitators of the event can meet and interact with each other and discuss best practices to improve relationships between the general public and law enforcement.

The Citizen Security Secretariat has been working to deal with crime in the country with a public health perspective. The fair event was hosted with the aim of improving communications between various parts of the community.

The Better Opportunities fair brought together a wide range of partners in its first edition. The programme was attended by several members of the St Kitts and Nevis Public life.

The list includes businesses, government agencies, NGOs, and community-based organizations, who engage directly with the public. The officers can attend and interact with the  general public and discuss the areas that need support:

  • Economic empowerment
  • Education and skills training
  • Youth development
  • Mental health and wellness
  • Social support and community care

Different members of the community discussed the idea of dealing with crime and violence with the lens of public health. The officials believe that it is important for the nation to have a unified approach to dealing with crime and violence.

The initiative is proof of the fact that the administration of St Kitts and Nevis is working hard to deal with crime in a permanent manner. The leadership wants to make sure that crime in the federation can go down in a more sustainable manner.
