A local businessman said Monday that the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party administration under the leadership of former Prime Minister the Rt Hon Dr Denzil Douglas, has done more for St Kitts and Nevis and its people, than the PAM (People’s Action Movement of Dr Kennedy Simmonds 1980-1995) and the TUG (Team Unity Government of Dr Timothy Harris 2015 – present) administrations combined.
“However, if you were to listen to members of the TUG you would be convinced that nothing good was done in this country between 1995-2015,” said A.U Browne.
In a FaceBook posting, Browne said that Dr Kennedy Simmonds had good intentions and vision but were unable to attract investors for two major tourism projects, namely Port Zante and the South East Peninsula.
“It took the Douglas administration to actually bring development and life to those key areas of our tourism product,” said Browne.
“One would also be mindful that it was the late Robert Bradshaw that designated the Frigate Bay area for hotel and tourism-related development. Simmonds tried to follow that designation by constructing a highway named after himself, but falling rocks and other impediments prevented investors from developing the South East Peninsula,” said Browne, who boldly stated that “all the development that has taken place there, were done during the 20 years that Dr. Douglas and Labour managed the affairs of the federation.”
He is further of the view that since the election in 2015, the Timothy Harris-led government has brought no major development to St Kitts and Nevis.
“The second cruise pier was the brain child of Labour. But for whatever reason, Labour dragged their feet on the project which should have been constructed during their last term. The TUG will claim it as their project, just like how Labour can rightfully stake claim to developing Port Zante and the South East Peninsula,” Browne added.
Stating that he was not going to list all the accomplishments of the previous government because they are capable of defending their impressive record, Browne in concluding his post, accused the Timothy Harris Unity Government (THUG) of “fooling the nation regarding three hotel projects that were to have started, but it appears that their first and possibly only term will yield no hotels just like under PAM 1980-1995.”
“In contrast, Labour significantly increased the hotel stock, if not doubling our room count to what it was upon taking office. Yes, there are those who want to mislead the world with their propaganda and intentional fabrications, but you know know better. Sometimes we have to give credit were credit is due and not allow those obsessed with partisan politics to rewrite the federation’s political history,” said Browne.
