A mural advocating an end to domestic violence in St Kitts and Nevis was unveiled on November 27 2023, as the Department of Equality prepares to observe 16 Days against Sexual Violence.
Junior Minister of Gender Affairs Isalean Phillip and Senior Equality Officer Shinnel Charles previously announced the 16-day observation as a stand against gender violence.
The stand against gender violence commenced on November 27 with an artwork of a woman with a bruised and battered face in the picture, symbolizing the physical and mental trauma of domestic violence.
Feature of the artwork: Her eyes are teary, and her hand covers her mouth, representing the silence and oppression that victims often experience. The image emphasizes the power dynamics of abusive relationships and the social silence surrounding such issues.
Additionally, the mural features empowering messages such as Break the Silence and Working Together to End Domestic Violence. There’s a phone number for help, emphasizing the importance of support and the fight against domestic violence.
Junior Minister of Gender Affairs said, “We are documenting and advocating to break the silence on gender-based violence as part of the advocacy and awareness-raising that we are trying to do as part of the reality of gender-based violence in our Union. ”
She added that the Equality Department has a mandate to provide resources to victims of domestic violence, and the mural will help expand the conversation about 16 Days Against Sexual Violence.
The campaign started on November 27 and is going to end on December 10. Minister Nisbett noted that the 16-day campaign closely follows International Men’s Day on November 19.
“Unfortunately, men are also seen as the main perpetrators of violence, so this month can be a call to be allies and join the fight because only together,” she said.
Finally, Minister Nisbett continued to encourage men to set a good example for boys.
