Trinidad and Tobago: John Jeremie, former Attorney General in the People’s National Movement administration is now endorsing the United National Congress during the 2025 election season. Jeremie was officially welcomed into the UNC family during a public meeting hosted at the Bhupsingh Park.

Jeremie has worked in the government of former PM Patrick Manning from November 2003 to November 2007. He was again selected as the Attorney General from May 2009 to May 2010 for the PNM administration.

Jeremie was a notable leader within the PNM ranks and remained in the high graces of the political party. However, the former AG openly supported the UNC during a public meeting at Bhupsingh Park. John Jeremie said that he understands that many of the people gathered at the meeting do not expect to see him supporting the UNC.

However, he said that he believes that the political party, which is currently the official parliamentary opposition, deserves to be endorsed. He called the leader of UNC “patriotic” and extended his support to the United National Congress for the elections.

The politician worked with the People’s National Movement administration for five years. He said that his former political party has not been able to improve the living standards of the people.

Jeremie highlighted that he has faith that the United National Congress can change the situation for the better. He also said that on the election day, April 28, 2025, he would be voting for the UNC and called for his supporters to do the same.

The leadership of the United National Congress has extended a warm welcome to the politician into their family. Kamala Persad Bissessar told John Jeremie that the UNC will welcome him with their arms wide open.

The appearance of a politician and former Attorney General at the UNC public meeting was a shock. His open endorsement of the UNC was also surprising for many of the people present at the meeting.

However, he highlighted that his endorsement of the current opposition party is inspired by the ground realities of the nation. In the last ten years, during which PNM has remained in power, the nation has not seen any notable development.

The communities remain rampant with crime and the situation is dire with respect to the nation’s economy.

He urged the people to think hard about the leaders that they want to vote into power during the election. He made the call after asking the people at the meeting if they believe they are better off today than they were a decade ago.

The answer to this question was a resounding “no” from the gathered crowd of people. This, in turn prompted the former parliamentarian to urge the people gathered to vote for change, vote for the UNC as he plans to do on April 28.

He also explained the reason for his switch to other political party and extending his support to the UNC. He acknowledged that his decision raises questions on the loyalty of John Jeremie, who has served with PNM.

However, he reasoned that his decision is driven by the state of the nation that he is seeing.  He asserted that he is dedicated to service to the country and believes that working with UNC will align with this goal.
