Trinidad and Tobago: United National Congress has launched a comprehensive agenda to strengthen workers’ rights and financial security. The agenda is a part of the Minifesto launch ahead of the elections scheduled for April 28.

The expansive Workers’ Agenda was finalized after several meeting sessions with the trade unions of Trinidad and Tobago. The consultations, which have been organized by the UNC, featured suggestions from OWTU, JTUM, SWWTU, NATUC, and NUGFW.

The Workers’ Agenda is a proof of the UNC’s commitment for the welfare of the working class in Trinidad and Tobago. The United National Congress has made a commitment to ensure fair wages for all members of the working class.

The UNC has announced that they will give the workers the right to negotiate and bargain for their rightful wages. The party has promised to eliminate 4% and 5% wage cuts for all public servants that have been mandated by the government.

The officials have shared that they want to ensure that the people of the country can make enough to support themselves and their families. The UNC administration will also help in making sure that contract employment in the country happens less often.

The political party will be making efforts to ensure that permanent jobs can be given out to the people of the country. The Minifesto suggests as a central element, Workers’ Agenda essential legal changes.

UNC promises to revise the laws governing the Trinidad and Tobago Revenue Authority (TTRA) legislation. They want the TTRA to allow for the establishment of union representation.

This change in the legislation will allow for the private sector workers to participate in labour negotiations. The political party has announced that they will accept the labour union applications and protect  domestic employees.

The administration has acknowledged that the domestic employees are often vulnerable to exploitation. The party has also promised to support the people who are earning minimum wage through the pension system by contributions.

This will help the employees maintain financial security in their retirement years. The  United National Congress also wants to remove all taxes that affect retirement benefits and private pensions.

This will make sure that the senior citizens do not face financial burdens in their retirement years. The party has also pledged to work with unions and stakeholders to ensure HDC housing is available to every member of the working class.

The political party also promised to provide better healthcare facilities and make sure that the working class is protected against the shocks of inflation and economic change.
