Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr Keith Mitchell announced a minor reshuffle of his Cabinet on Wednesday, reflecting the ongoing efforts by the administration to deal with “outstanding issues” at the T. A. Marryshow Community College.
A statement by the Government said that Mitchell had promised quick action to address the troubling issues a week ago and discussed it at a meeting with the representatives from the college and the college council, the TAMCC Lecturers Association and the Grenada Union of Teachers (GUT).
The meeting was attended by Emmalin Pierre, Education Minister and Minister in the Ministry of Education, Pamela Moses, with the responsibility for the Skills Development, Tertiary Education and Education Outreach.
Mitchell said that Pierre would now be responsible for all the areas of education, including those which were previously assigned to Moses, who has been made a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, with responsibility for the Special Projects, Needy Assistance and the ICT.
Mitchell said that the change in the cabinet is directly linked to the need for a clear and decisive action to address the issues at TAMCC. Given the enormity of the actions required, it is unfair to have a Minister, with a such a short track record of engagement with the college, take the lead in addressing the matters of the college.
Therefore, the Prime Minister decided that Minister Pierre, as the Minister for Education, will be playing a more hands-on role in addressing these issues.
Meanwhile, the reassignment of Minister Moses will provide a tremendous opportunity for growth, given the significant areas of responsibility now assigned to her.
The statement said that in her capacity, Moses would have responsibility for a budget of around EC$15 million as well as multi-million dollar ICT projects that will promote the country’s digital government strategy among other things.
In addition to the change in the ministerial portfolios, Prime Minister Mitchell also confirmed the appointment of an Interim Chairman for the College Council which governs the affairs of TAMCC.
