The Jamaica Fire Brigade is advising persons to utilise the increased work from home for reducing fire hazards around their homes and be vigilant in identifying fire hazards.
Emeleo Ebanks, Officer in Charge of the Fire Prevention Division at the JFB, said that during this time, when a lot of people are working from home, persons should use the opportunity to get rid of all inflammable material.
He said they would have seen a ban on single-use plastic bags, and he knows that it is a significant concern, because people may still have some bags in drawers and cabinets. Also, that stack of newspapers which a lot of persons have at home may aid in the surface spread and the rate of the surface spread of a fire.
The JFB is also appealing to adults to keep in mind that children should not be left unattended, and flammable substances should be placed out of the reach of their reach, particularly now that children are home for most of the time.
Persons are being reminded to not leave the gas stove unattended for prolonged periods, check the proper functioning of gas regulators and stoves and refrain from keeping stoves under windows which have decorative curtains.
Mr Ebanks said that while more devices are being used at home, which increases the need for charging, persons should not overload extension cords and sockets, as this can damage appliances and also lead to fires.
