The Nevis administration has officially started the construction work of the multi-million-dollar expansion and enhancement project at the Vance W. Amory International Airport. A ceremony was held at Newcastle St. James on Wednesday July 1, 2026 to mark the official commencement of the project.
The Nevis Island Administration mentioned that through this initiative they are working on strengthening the air connectivity in the island along with stimulating economic growth and to advance the island’s tourism industry.
According to reports, the project is expected to be completed in 18 months. Under the project the airport runway will be extended by 2,000 feet, which means after the completion of the project the total length of the runway will be 6,000 feet.
In the project update, administration also mentioned several new compartments in the airport including a new fire hall, fuel farm, modern and expanded terminal building, new customs hall and extended parking apron which will be capable of accommodating up to 50 executive jets.
The opening ceremony for the groundbreaking of the expansion project was addressed by Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis and Minister of Tourism, Finance and Economic Planning. During the ceremony, the Premier of Nevis informed the attendants that the investment and expansion of Vance W. Amory International Airport is a forward step in securing the future of Nevis for the next generation.
He said, “ We are making history with this investment, which will help propel Nevis into the Future, an upgraded Vance W. Amory International Airport will benefit both Nevis and the Federation for generations to come”.
Mark Brantley further explained that during the construction phase, the project will generate jobs for locals across Nevis. The project is expected to require individuals to fill out jobs like contractors, skilled tradesmen, and labourers.
The Premier of Nevis also expressed gratitude to the Federal government for acting as the guarantor for Nevis Island Administration and supporting them in securing a loan of EC$20 million from St. Kitts Nevis-Anguilla National Bank for the expansion project.
Notably, for the Nevis expansion project, the government of Republic of China (Taiwan), also gave the Nevis administration a concessional loan of US$20 Million The French-Israeli businessman Patrick Drahi contributed funds to the amount of US$ 25 million for the expansion project of the Nevis administration.
