The Basseterre Desalination Plant will be commissioned for the use of the people of Basseterre and the surrounding communities on Tuesday. The announcement of the commissioning ceremony was made on February 17, 2026. The event is scheduled for 9:00 AM at the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Park.
The desalination plant will help in reducing the water shortages faced by communities in Basseterre and surrounding areas including St Peter’s. The plant will provide up to two million gallons of portable water daily.
The construction of this project began keeping in mind the long-term water shortage issues in Baseterre and the surrounding area. Officially the construction of the plant began after the opening ceremony on July 17th, 2024. With the commission of this plant, the long time problem of water scarcity which had plagued the island for almost a decade will be addressed and a reliable 24 hour service will be ensured to the capital.
In earlier phases, St. Kitts and Nevis did not face a significant water crisis. Their major source of water consisted of a combination of surface and groundwater. But with the changes in climatic conditions the level of rainfall fell. Because of this the sources became insufficient in addressing the existing and growing demands for potable water of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
But with the commissioning of a new plant tomorrow, residents will soon start to reap benefits from improved water security and better service provided. With the commission of the new plant, the water portfolio of St. Kitts and Nevis has also been diversified.
Konris Maynard, The Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities stated that the plant represents a critical investment in their national infrastructure and it is a tangible demonstration of the Government’s decisive action to address the long standing water challenge in the capital.
St. Kitts Water Services Departments has put in many efforts to find other solutions in regards to better the level of service provided. Apart from desalination, the department has also used aerial technology to make a note of seventeen potential drill sites in the northern parts of St. Kitts and Nevis.
As the ceremony of commissioning will take place tomorrow, the updates regarding the same will be made public on official WSD channels by Public Infrastructure News.
