The government of St Kitts and Nevis has enacted the Special Sustainability Zone Authorisation Bill, 2025, in the National Assembly. The session of the national assembly was hosted on Monday, August 11. The aim of the passage of this new law is to make sure that the development of the country can coincide with the sustainable development goals.
Through the law, the government is working on creating ways to bring development to the economy of St Kitts and Nevis. However, the government also wants to make sure that the development comes with sustainable development.
The Prime Minister has shared that the development of the country has to go on while the environment remains protected. Addressing the National Assembly, the Prime Minister highlighted that they will establish Special Sustainability Zones
These Special Sustainability Zones will be areas where the developers will legally be required to work with strict sustainability, climate resilience and infrastructure standards. According to Dr Terrance Drew, the government of St Kitts and Nevis is pursuing a balanced diversification plan
He said that they are working on modernizing the tourism sector of the country, improving the renewable energy, water security, development in agriculture and more. This law is the first in the history of the country to legally integrate the seven pillars of sustainability to development.
The law establishes that the developers have to deliver on multiple pillars of sustainable development. The officials have shared that before starting a new project, the developers have to present their plans to integrate reliable water systems, renewable energy at scale,
The development must meet standards of sustainable food systems, green industry and tourism. The law is not only the first of its kins to be enacted in St Kitts and Nevis, but also puts St Kitts and Nevis at the forefront of such initiatives.
St Kitts and Nevis is the first country in the Caribbean region to enact a law that integrates national development, sustainability and environmental protection in such a seamless manner.
