The St Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) has announced that the outbreak of the fire in the Conarees community has not affected operations at the RLB International Airport. The officials made the announcement after a bush fire broke out in the Conaree Community.
The officials have issued guidelines for communities affected by the thick black smoke in the nearby landfill.
The information was shared by the authorities on their social media pages. They shared a thorough update regarding the outbreak of fire in the region. The officials have shared that the Landfill where the fire erupted is close to the Robert L Bradshaw International Airport.
As such, the people of the island were sending in enquiries to SCASPA regarding the operations of the airport. The authorities have confirmed that the airport is not under threat at this time, and operations continue normally.
The Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) also shared update on the situation and operations at the airport. The SWMC has shared that the fire started in the Construction and Demolition (C&D) cell.
The officials from the corporation deployed the fire suppression resources immediately, however, the intensity of the fire exceeded our on-site control efforts. The fire spread from the point of origin and it spread to the tyre storage area of the facility.
The authorities have shared that they are currently working on the response and containment operations.
SWMC has encouraged all residents in surrounding communities to remain mindful of smoke and air quality conditions and to exercise the necessary precautions.
” We advise:
- Keep windows and doors closed where possible.
- Limit outdoor activity, particularly for children, the elderly, and persons with respiratory conditions.
- Follow any further advisories issued by the relevant authorities,” a statement said.
SWMC has thanked the Royal St. Kitts and Nevis Police Force, SCASPA, and the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services for their invaluable support and swift response. “The collaborative efforts of these agencies have been instrumental in managing this incident and safeguarding the surrounding community,” SWMC said.
The Solid Waste Management Corporation said it continue to provide updates to the public as the situation progresses. They have also announced that they sincerely apologize to all residents, businesses, and stakeholders for any inconvenience or disruption this incident may have caused.
“We deeply regret the impact this fire event has had on nearby communities and wish to assure the public that we are doing everything within our power to bring the situation under control as swiftly and safely as possible. Your safety and well-being remain our highest priority,” said the SWMC.
