Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew has addressed some genuine concerns of the people of St Kitts and Nevis. Responding to a question in relation to the Destiny SSZ Project, Dr Drew said that the basic vision behind bringing this legislation to the country was to make sure that the people can understand and discuss major projects which the government is working on which can majorly affect St Kitts and Nevis.
The Prime Minister has shared that his administration is dedicated to ensuring transparency and good governance. As such, any projects which come to the island under the Special Sustainablity Zones will be brought to the parliament before any concrete developments are done.
The Prime Minister said that he is constantly addressing the concerns of the people of the country who are genuinely interested in understanding the working of the SSZ Act. He said that while it is not possible for him to repeal an act which has been debated in parliament and passed, he is open to going intp parliament where he believes the legislation can be strengthened.
Dr Drew has shared that the act has a clear and accountable set of rules which govern it. He has also repeatedly clarified that the act poses no threat to the national laws, rules and sovereignty of the country.
He added that this project has the capacity to bring significant FDI to the island and improve the economic stability of the country.
At the same time Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew also highlighted that he is delighted to see the people asking questions and being involved in discussions.
Accountability is one of the most important mandates held by the Dr Terrance Drew led government. He addressed the working of the act for the people of the country to understand.
However, in the same breath, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew said that he wants to ignore the political players who are using this legislation to cause chaos after its passage. He said that the opposition was given time to see all the aspects of the SSZ Act before coming to parliament.
The opposition chose not to speak anything in the parliament and are using the law to incite the public.
