Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew addressed the members of the media during the June edition of The Roundtable. The monthly interaction with the members of the media served as a platform for the people of the island to get an in-depth insight into the developments which have been taking place within the island.
Dr Drew started the media interaction with an update on the water situation within the island and talked about the severe drought that the nation is facing. The Prime Minister confirmed that they were given a projection about this crisis within the country with respect to water scarcity when they came into office in 2022.
He explained that the administration has made significant investment in improving the water security on the island. He talked about the Desalination Plant which was constructed in Basseterre, confirming that the plant supplies 24 hour water supply to the Basseterre region..
He also informed the members of the media about the drilling projects which are ongoing in different parts of the country. Dr Drew highlighted that they are currently drilling in the saddlers area, improving water supply to the community.
The Prime Minister also highlighted that they have made investments on updating the pipelines in several parts of the island. The Prime Minister also highlighted that after the various investments which were made in the water infrastructure, 70 percent of the country has access to regular, uninterrupted water supply.
This, according to Dr Terrance Drew, is a major development for the country as the situation was much worse when they came into office. The Prime Minister said that when he and his team came into office in 2022, less than 20% of the population had access to regular drinking water.
The Prime Minister also talked about the digital transformation of the country with the planned rollout of the E-id. The Prime Minister confirmed that the national ID system of te country is almost complete and people will be able to use the IDs soon.
The E-Ids will be the only document that the people will need to carry for identification in banks and other organisations. The Prime Minister also talked about the passport modernisation which is also a part of the country’s digitisation agenda.
Dr Drew said, “We are already building the process where you can just apply for your passport online so that we eliminate that long line that we have down on Church Street.”
Dr Drew utilised the opportunity to congratulate the St Kitts and Nevis Robotics Association for successfully building the National Digital Health Information System. Dr Terrance Drew was proud to highlight that the youngsters in college who are masters in IT and computer systems who actually built our National Digital Health Information System.
The Health Information System was also seen and evaluated by the experts from Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO). The organisation endorsed the system after seeing it and also praised the system for being upto international standards.
