The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis held the official commissioning ceremony of the Basseterre Desalination Plant on February 24, 2026. The commissioned ceremony was held at the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Site.
The aim of the commissioning of the plant is to strengthen the nation’s water security. The New Basseterre Desalination Plant will produce two-gallons of potable water per day. The Plant works on reverse osmosis technology which helps in delivering a reliable, climate-resilient water supply in Basseterre and neighbourhood communities.
Notably, the funding of the plant was provided by the Republic of China (Taiwan). Also the New Basseterre Desalination Plant was executed under the direction of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure partnership with the Water Services Department and Technical partners Royal Utilities Ltd.
Additionally, the plant will highlight the critical investment in people’s needs, and the future oriented. It also depicts the Government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda which works in enhancing the infrastructure resilience, safeguard public health, and ensures equal access to essential services.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew attended the New Basseterre Desalination Plant commissioning ceremony, where Konris Maynard, Minister of Water Services, senior officials, Cabinet colleagues and locals of East Basseterre were also present to witness the proud and historic moments of the Water Services Department.
The plant will reduce the water interruptions and expand the 24-hour potable water services in the area of Basseterre. Konris Maynard, Minister of Water Services mentioned in the ceremony that this initiative represents a major step forward in making Saint Kitts and Nevis stronger and more resilient.
Maynard also praised the efforts of workers of the Water Services Department and their partners. “ The New Basseterre Desalination Plant reflects the Careful planning, investment and the dedication of the workers.”
He also mentioned that this is not a final stage, it is a new beginning of restoring 24/7 water service, and enhancing the infrastructure. In future Saint Kitts and Nevis will upgradement and develop more wells.
He even said our work will continue and in the present we celebrate progress, but tomorrow we start our mission. “ Water is life. And every drop counts”
