US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio engaged with the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew on the sidelines of the 50th Regular Meeting of the Heads of the Government of CARICOM. Rubio was in St Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday for a high level meeting with the Prime Minister.
During the high level bilateral meeting, the US Secretary of State was accompanied by several other senior US officials. The bilateral meeting was focussed on improving the relationship between the United States of America and St Kitts and Nevis.
The meeting was one of the most anticipated interactions in the 50th Regular Meeting of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community. The arrival of the US representative was a historic event for the nation and the regional summit.
During the meeting, PM Drew and Secretary Rubio held discussions in several areas, including the expansion of education opportunities, energy security and more. Prior to the meeting, during the opening of the 50th Regular Meeting of the Heads of the Government of CARICOM, the Prime Minister had committed to continuing work on several of these topics.
The two leaders also discussed how they will be collaborating on the management of transnational crime. Other areas of their discussions included the development of the country’s infrastructure, better international relationships.
During this engagement, Dr Drew, on behalf of St Kitts and Nevis highlighted their aim of diversifying their economy. The nation has been looking forward to partnerships with US organizations in line with their mandate of creating long term capacity for growth.
During his visit to St Kitts and Nevis, Marco Rubio also met with other leaders and Prime Ministers from the Caribbean region. Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar, who is attending the 50th Regular meeting of the CARICOM, also had the opportunity to interact with the US Seceretary of State.
The interaction were proof of the fact that Rubio’s attendance during the four day CARICOM summit was aimed towards strengthening the region’s ties with the United States of America. Rubio’s one day visit to the island on the sidelines of the regional summit was hailed as historic for the growth of the region.
