The Bureau of Standards Jamaica has established and developed seven standards for adaptation, which would be providing guidelines as well as safeguards for the protection of the consumers as well as for assisting companies by positioning cannabis operations for the export market.
The Bureau of Standards Jamaica, which is an agency of Jamaica’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, has developed the standards as a part of the efforts of strengthening and supporting the cannabis industry in the island nation.
Minister of State, Floyd Green, said while addressing the virtual launch of the cannabis standards yesterday that the standards were an indication of the commitment of the Government towards ensuring that the relevant legislative frameworks and policies are in place for facilitation and safeguarding both consumers and stakeholders.
Green also praised the work which the bureau has put in for have the standards developed.
He said that he is very pleased that the bureau took an all-inclusive and all-encompassing approach in the development of these standards.
He said that he has to praise the strong technical committee, which is made up of members from the bureau, academia, growers, licensees and a wide cross-section of players in the cannabis industry which were brought together and were seized with the urgency of the moment. They worked hard around the clock to ensure that Jamaica has these strong standards.
Green pointed out that Jamaica takes pride in itself of not only being the first country in the region to embark on the formal medicinal cannabis industry but also, the country is continuing to lead the region in developing standards of this type.
He said that globally the cannabis industry is still in its growth phase and as such these international standards will build on the small body of work already achieved and will help to drive further development of standards across this essential industry.
