The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Denzil Douglas has assumed the Chairmanship of the COFCOR during the 28th Regular Meeting of the organization. The event which was hosted at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort in Frigate Bay was attended by several Ministers and stakeholders of Foreign and Community Relations.
During the event, the Secretary General of the CARICOM Carla Barnett welcomed Dr Douglas into his position as the chairperson of COFCOR. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade et al will be handling the responsibility for a one year tenure.
The Secretary General of the CARICOM is confident that Dr Douglas will lead the COFCOR well during his tenure. Minister of Foreign Affairs Denzil Douglas highlighted the need for public attention to current geopolitical developments.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs shared that the bonds and partnerships that were previously considered sacred have now been getting diminished. The officials have shared that it is important for the countries to realign their priorities.
The Minister said that this is an opportunity for the Caribbean to define its own civilization and shape the kind of community it aspired to be. The Minister also urged the other members of the community to work on national and regional development initiatives.
The meeting should also help in making sure that the members of the CARICOM have strong relationships between non-traditional partners along with the Caribbean Community. The call came in light of the conflicts that the world at large is going through.
The 28th regular meeting of the COFCOR was a platform for all the CARICOM stakeholders in foreign and community relations to come together.
The two day meeting served as an opportunity for the attendants to socialize and interact with each other and come up with initiatives to make life better for the CARICOM. In her address, SG Barnette said that she is hoping to see the CARICOM leaders engage in lively debates and discussions.
St Kitts and Nevis hosted the CARICOM stakeholders for two days and engaged in a number of productive meetings and dialogues. The chairmanship of COFCOR was held previously by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Dominica, Dr. Vince Henderson.
Dr Henderson was also present at the event and delivered an address on the opening ceremony for the regular meeting. He received applause from the Secretary General for his work and leadership of the COFCOR during the previous year.
