Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew welcomed St Kitts and Nevis national football legend Keith Kayamba Gumbs to his office at Government Headquarters for a cordial and meaningful meeting on April 29, 2025 (Tuesday). PM Drew was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley, who was born in the same hometown as Keith Kayamba Gumbs, Newtown.
Minister Hanley also took to social media shortly after the meeting and called it an ‘honor’ to meet his fellow Newtowner, schoolmate, and a distinguished professional footballer. He further added that it was the first time PM Drew and Gumbs met in person and that their conversation was full of sharing fond memories of their school days.
Minister Geoffrey Hanley and PM Terrance Drew also paid their condolences to Gumbs and his family on the recent passing of his brother, Jason Gumbs, who was also a talented footballer.
They often called the most accomplished and beloved footballer in the history of St Kitts and Nevis, Keith Kayamba Gumbs also took a moment to congratulate PM Dr Terrance Drew on his leadership and service to the nation.
About Keith Kayamba Gumbs
Keith Gumbs is a Kittitian former professional footballer born in 1972 in Basseterre. He started playing football while he was attending Newton Primary School and played the position of a forward.
He continued playing football even when he was attending Basseterre Junior High and Basseterre Senior High. Not only football, Gumbs was also interested in other sports and played cricket as well as basketball.
He made his professional football debut in 1989 as he helped Newton win the league and the cup which led to him receiving a call from the National Senior team’s head coach, Alphonso Bridgewater.
Among his many accolades is the “Medal of Honor” which was given to him in 2008 in recognition of his exceptional contribution to national sports development.
