St Kitts and Nevis hosts Regional Security System Council of Ministers Meeting

St Kitts and Nevis hosted the Regional Security System (RSS) Council of Ministers Meeting on Friday. The annual meeting, organized at the St Kitts Marriott Resort, brought together Ministers of National Security from across the region.  

The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, who is the current and outgoing chairman of the Regional Security System Council delivered his final address at the council.  

He called for a unified approach to confronting some of the security challenges that the region is facing. In his address, Dr Drew highlighted that unity is one of the most important prerequisites to handling the crisis.  

Taking the example of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Drew highlighted that the federation has seen some promising results in terms of crime prevention and better security of the people.  

The Prime Minister was proud to announce that St Kitts and Nevis has not seen any homicides in the last six months. According to the Minister of National Security, this is the most promising statistics they have had in years. 

Dr Drew said that he would continue to build on this success and urged the rest of the nations in attendance to take inspiration from this success. He said that regional security can be achieved with a united effort. 

In the words of the Prime Minister, Dr Terrance Drew has shared that the safety of the nations is interconnected. The officials have shared that it is important for the leadership to understand that their safety is dependent on each other.  

Talking about crime as a public health crisis, PM Drew highlighted that the countries need to invest their energy into prevention, education, rehabilitation. He called this initiative community immunization.  

The message that the Prime Minister gave went beyond the typical boundaries of the Caribbean. He  said that the world is currently facing many crises, cybercrime, transnational trafficking and more.  

In dealing with these crises, the international partners must  become “partners” and work as one. He says that as Small Island states  in the Caribbean, the stability and pace of all the nations influence the wider stability of the region itself.  

In his message for the RSS Council of Ministers, at the final meeting as chairman, he said, our shared security is all our concern.
