Denzil Douglas, Foreign Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis concluded his six-day visit to India on Friday, August 9. Marked as the historic diplomatic visit, it intensified the existing cooperation and bilateral ties among both the countries.
The experts claim that this first-ever Foreign Ministerial visit from St. Kitts and Nevis to the Republic of India set the island ahead of other Caribbean islands, as during this short visit, both the countries agreed to collaborate on diverse areas which would prove fruitful for the welfare of both the countries.
Dr. Douglas visited several Indian ministers and officials to discuss matters of common interest, and he, along with his team, conducted various field trips to learn about the ongoing developmental projects in India.
MoU for digital transformation
Significantly, St Kitts and Nevis signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India to share successful digital solutions for population-scale digital transformation. This was signed on August 5 between S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and Dr Denzil Douglas.
This MoU has been signed under the flagship programme of the Indian Government, Digital India.
MoU for cooperation in sports matters
In addition to digital collaboration, the second MoU that was signed is between Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, India and Dr. Douglas. During their meeting they discussed the various areas of cooperation in sports matters on August 5.
As the Olympics 2024 is ongoing and the results till now have been in favour of the Caribbean and Indian Players, they have been winning medals at international stages, such collaboration will enhance the sports cooperation and exchange of coaches, players and infrastructure would prove to be beneficial for the present as well as future athletes of both the countries.
Collaboration between the two countries will include athlete and coach training, sports science, research, infrastructure development, youth exchanges, and anti-doping programs, including partnerships between universities for physical education and fitness development. This will also involve technical assistance, exchange programs for sports leaders, and the sharing of technology and research in the field of sports.
MoU signed with the Indian Minister of External Affairs
The meeting hosted by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday, August 6 opened several avenues for collaboration between India and St. Kitts and Nevis. Further discussion on expanding partnership to digital, health, food security and capacity development was held between the leaders. They also exchanged views on convergences as Global South in the multilateral arena.
Before the meeting concluded, another MoU between bothnations was signed to further intensify bilateral political consultations.
Collaborative talks and ties strengthening
Moreover, on Wednesday, Foreign Minister of St Kitts and Nevis also met Union Minister JP Nadda and discussed a wide range of cooperation between India and St. Kitts and Nevis in the health sector.
JP Nadda further said that they are committed to collaborating further in areas including medical education and non-communicable diseases.
The nations are committed to collaborating further in specific areas such as medical education, non-communicable diseases, the pharmaceutical sector, and medical value travel. The leaders are confident that this productive meeting will further strengthen our strategic and bilateral relationships.
It is to be noted that India under its “Vaccine Maitri” initiative helped St. Kitts and Nevis and other Caribbean countries with COVID-19 vaccines to fight against the pandemic. This collaboration can further help the island nation as the government when required sends patients abroad for their medical treatments, choosing India can be great choice as medical infrastructure and the ongoing research reveals that India has one of the best medical infrastructures.
Strategic Collaboration for National Development
Additionally, Dr. Denzil Douglas also engaged in productive meeting with Chairman and Managing Director of Engineers India Limited Vartika Shukla.
They discussed areas of mutual cooperation and explored how EIL’s technical and project execution capabilities can be leveraged for the development of St Kitts & Nevis.
Talks on sustainable energy sharing
A significant meeting with Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General at Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) focused on enhancing bilateral economic cooperation and collaboration in energy, mainly solar energy, capacity building and tourism.
Trade and Business Investment
The leader from the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis had fruitful meeting with Jitin Prasada, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry of India. During which they discussed about several challenges faced by the small island nations and also about the natural resourced the island of St. Kitts and Nevis has been blessed with.
Significant visits
Foreign Minister Douglas also met Prahlad Joshi, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Senior representatives from Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), The Energy and Research Institute (TERI), Engineers India Ltd., Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), All India Institute of Ayurveda and NPCI International (NIPI).
Further, he paid a field visit to the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) Central warehouse at Manesar and to The Energy Research Institute (TERI) Research centre at Gurugram.
Major Outcomes from this Historic Visit
Notably, major outcomes from Dr. Douglas’s visit include agreements on India STACK, which will enable cooperation in the field of digitalization, and a bilateral agreement for cooperation in the field of sports, especially sports medicine and training of athletes.
Additionally, it also included an MoU for regular consultations between the two Foreign Ministries was also signed during the visit, which would open doors for immediate communication, collaborative decision making.
