John Benjamin was a community figure—serving as a Past President of Rotary International, Anguilla, and as President of the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce from 1987 to 1988. His impact resonated with those who welcomed him to Anguilla in 1983, assisting him in establishing his practice.
Reflecting on his Decade of Legal Eminence
Almost a decade ago, on Friday, September 20, 2013, there was a turning point in the life and practice of law for John Benjamin, KC. Born in St Kitts, he made a wonderful trip to Anguilla, where he founded the successful Caribbean Juris Chambers. His trajectory could have taken him down a different path, as his grandmother envisioned him as an Anglican priest, but fate led him to England to study law.
Roots, Humility, and Establishing a Legal Legacy
Before arriving in Anguilla, Benjamin spent much time in St Kitts, where he worked as a youth and community worker. He studied for his law degree at Warwick University in Coventry and laid the foundation for a career marked by humility and dedication. Grateful for the support of the late Sir Lee L Moore, Benjamin received a scholarship to attend Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica, which set the stage for his return to St Kitts and then to Anguilla.
Notable Appointments and Achievements
John Benjamin, KC, earned a reputation as a disciplinarian committed to the letter of the law and lawyers’ commitment. His illustrious career included serving as Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean. Serving as a Court of Appeal judge three times, he held prominent positions in Nevis, Montserrat and St Kitts. His recent appointment as Queen’s Counsel in February of that year further highlighted his contribution to the legal world.
