The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, travelled to Brussels in Belgium for the EU-CELAC Summit, which took place for two days, July 17 and July 18, 2023. During the summit, Prime Minister Drew met and interacted with several international leaders from the European Union and Latin America. Dr Drew also delivered a short speech on the prominence of the show.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew shared that the EU-CELAC Summit is the platform to discuss issues of mutual concern and importance for the various people in the country. He acknowledged that the summit would serve as an opportunity to come up with solutions to issues the global community faces.
It is important to note that the leaders of over 50 nations attended the summit, which is taking place after a gap of eight years. Dr Drew attended the summit alongside his delegation of ministers, including the Minister of sustainable development, Dr Joyelle Clarke and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, international trade, commerce and industry et al.
During his address, Dr Terrance Drew took the opportunity to share his views and those of his nation on the mounting issue of climate change. The Prime Minister and his administration, for the last 11 months, have been committed to fighting the “existential threat” of Climate Change.
He stated that no country in the world remains untouched by the devastating effects of climate change. Accordingly, he asserted that all the nations in the world need to chart their way in making this regard. He stated that in this regard, they need to prioritize multilateral cooperation within the various nations across the globe.
He believes it would help to effectively navigate the global web of climate finance, policy, ambition, and action in addressing the climate crisis. The country’s Prime Minister asserted that they are making several strides to fight the cause of the international existential climate change crisis.
Dr Terrance Drew also mentioned St Kitts and Nevis’s steps to tackle the issue. The Prime Minister stated that as the smallest nation in the western hemisphere, they remain committed to tackling the issue of climate change. In line with this, they are building climate-resilient infrastructure and including geothermal-based energy.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew shared that they are working on increasing food security. They have expanded social protection and found innovative ways of uprooting systemic poverty and increasing national security threats.
