The Department of Cooperatives in the government of St Kitts and Nevis hosted a panel discussion as a part of the International Day of Cooperatives 2023 celebrations. The panel was hosted under the theme “Cooperatives: Partners for Accelerated Suatainable Development”, The attendants of the panel came together at the Solid Waste Management Conference Room on Tuesday 27, June 2023 for the significant discussion.
Through this panel the team at the Department of Cooperatives aimed to celebrate International Day of Cooperatives 2023.
The discussion was designed to bring awareness to the Cooperatives Sector. Accordingly, the team at the department of cooperatives hoped that the people of the federation of St Kitts and Nevis may have a better understanding of all that Cooperatives entail. Accordingly, they had invited a panal of experts on the issue.
These Panellists with their expertise were able to shine a light on a wealth of information in areas such as organic farming, crop farming, livestock farming, transformative leadership/ women in agriculture, junior saving, fisher cooperatives.
Meanwhile, the panel hosted by the department of cooperatives also had in attendance, Representatives from the various credit unions ij the country. They shared information on the contributions the cooperatives have and will continue to make, their successes and challenges and more.
President of the Gideon Force Agricultural Cooperative, Sankofa Maccabbee delivered the featured remarks at the panel. He was accompanied by the following other members:
- Representative from the Sandy Point Agricultural Cooperative, Lionel Stevens,
- President of the St. Kitts Farmers’ Cooperative Society, Solomon Morton,
- President of the Liamuiga Agricultural Cooperative, Telca Wallace,
- Junior Savings Champion from the Charles E Mills Secondary School (CEMSS),
- Representative from the Newtown Fishers Cooperative Wycliffe John
- President of the Police Cooperative Credit Union, Mr. Matthew McGuire.
Following the conclusion of the significant discussion between the panelists, participants were given the opportunity to ask their questions, air their concerns and share any suggestions they might have for the better functioning of the cooperatives.
