Chairperson of St Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Committee, Shannon Hawley, attended the National Carnival Media Briefing at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort on October 10.
While there, Hawley shared her opinion and insights on how the carnival season benefits the nation’s tourism sector.
According to the chairperson of St Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Committee, The goal of hosting the Carnival is to ensure that beds are filled just like every other festival in the region. She stated that the committee seeks to attract carnival lovers from around the Caribbean and internationally.
The arrival of such people would add to the nation’s economy, making the country feel a sort of trickle-down effect.
Chairperson Hawley declared, “Carnival is not a three-day music festival. It is an event where we encourage individuals to come in for our power week, especially the last week.
She explained, “You come for J’ouvert, stay for Christmas and New Year, and you are also participating in the first and last Carnival of the year,”
The chairperson of the carnival committee stated that the St Kitts Tourism Authority (SKTA) is starting to market the upcoming Carnival, not only to the US market but also to the regional markets.
Talking about the St Kitts Music Festival, Chairman Hawley stated that in hosting the St Kitts Music Festival, the intention of St Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Committee is to evaluate and understand how Carnival influences the overall society.
According to the Chairman of the St Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Committee, the St Kitts Tourism Authority (SKTA) is marketing the upcoming Carnival not only to the international (US) markets but also to the regional markets.
Some of the most prominent names of regional markets are:
Antigua, St. Maarten, Saber, Statia, Anguilla, and the US Virgin Islands.
According to Chairman Shannon Hawley, these markets that have always supported the St Kitts Music Festival. She also named a few other island nations, including Saint Lucia and Dominica, who have shown receptiveness to the St Kitts Music festival.
