Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew and other prominent leaders of St Kitts and Nevis have expressed their best wishes to the newly-appointed Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly. 

Tuesday, October 25, 2022, marked the opening of the Parliament of St Kitts and Nevis. At the opening event, the members of Parliament elected Lanein K. Blanchette and Latoya B. Jones into the position of Speaker and deputy speaker of the house.

As the Prime Minister, Dr Terrance Drew took to his Facebook account to congratulate the two female leaders on their appointment. 

Extending his best wishes to the newly appointed Speaker, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew wrote, I am proud to announce that the Hon. Lanien Blanchette has officially been elected and sworn-in as Speaker of the House of Assembly. I extend heartfelt congratulations to her and great success in her new role.

PM Terrance Drew also expressed his best wishes for the Deputy Speaker, Latoya Jones.

Meanwhile, The Premier of Nevis, Mark Brantley, also extended his greetings and best wishes to the Deputy Speaker, Latoya Jones. Jones has been an integral part of the Premier’s team in Nevis. 

He expressed his profound happiness in getting a chance to congratulate the newly appointed Deputy Speaker. While congratulating Ms Jones on her appointment, Premier Brantley also reiterated his political party’s commitment to promoting more women and youth in political leadership.

Additionally, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Denzil Douglas and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Geoffery Hanley congratulated the two leaders for their appointment into a position of such importance.

The Deputy Prime Minister wrote:

Women are at the helm of leadership in our twin island nation. I am pleased to be a part of a team that confidently and intentionally ensures women are empowered and allowed to serve our people.

Our mission of inclusivity, youth and woman empowerment has been demonstrated in our choice for Speaker and Deputy Speaker, and I take great honour in congratulating the Hon. Lanein K. Blanchette and the Hon. Senator Latoya B. Jones will now serve our nation as Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively. Both represent women’s power today and the hope for our girls’ tomorrow!
