According to new rules for visitors arriving in or transit through the United Kingdom, beginning January 8, 2025, citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis do not require a visa but must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
What Changed?
Earlier, visitors who belonged to the visa waiver program had no need to provide any extra documents for a visit to the UK. But following the implementation of the ETA, travelers are required to pass through a stringent online clearance point for them to be allowed in the country. Although this requirement in no way affects the visa free status of citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis, the acquisition of an ETA is now a mandatory procedure to travel to the UK.

Who Needs an ETA?
- UK Tourism visa applicants who are citizens of visa exempt countries visiting the UK for tourism, business, for a short course or to visit a family member or friend.
- People visiting the UK and those intending to leave the country.
How to Apply:
- Applications can be filed online through the official UK government website or through the UK ETA application that can be downloaded on IOS as well as Android.
- Requirements: An email address, an authorized passport and a credit/debit card to make the 10 GBP (12.49 USD) payment.
Processing Time:
- The majority of applications are handled within the next three working days. However, travelers are advised to apply earlier if possible.
Validity and Usage:
- An ETA is valid for a period of 2 years or the same length as the applicant’s passport, whichever comes first.
- It permits multiple visa entries to the United Kingdom for the stay of up to 6 months on each visit.
Who Does Not Require an ETA?
You are exempt from the UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement if any of the following apply to you:
- You currently have a genuine visa for the United Kingdom.
- You have permission to live, work, or study in the UK, including:
- Permanently residing or previous permanent residency status.
- Right of abode.
- You are a citizen of United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland.
- You are travelling with a British Overseas Territories citizen passport.
- You are a resident of Ireland and are traveling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or Isle of Man.
Dual Citizens
If an individual holds dual citizenship that includes the Irish citizenship or the British citizenship, he or she does not need an ETA. These individuals can prove their right to travel through one of the following options:
- A British passport.
- An Irish passport.
- Another passport that has endorsement of certificate of entitlement.
Avoid Confusion with ETIAS
It is also important to note that ETA system is peculiar to United Kingdom. Please do not confuse it with the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which is for the European Union. To visit Europe the citizens will have to apply for ETIAS separately and this is also planned to be brought into action this year.
