The Governor of far-eastern Khabarovsk region of Russia has been arrested on the suspicion of orchestrating the murder of a string of entrepreneurs around 15 years ago.
According to a statement which was published by Russia’s top investigative agency on Thursday, Sergey Furgal is being considered as the organiser of an attempted murder and also the murder of a number of entrepreneurs in 2004 and 2005.
Four members of the organised criminal group are allegedly linked with were previously convicted for their individual roles in the murders, which were committed in Khabarovsk and the neighbouring region of Amur, said the Investigative Committee which handles the investigations into the serious crimes.
Russian state news agency TASS reported that Furgal was taken into custody outside his home.
Images from the scene showed him wearing a suit and tie while being pulled from a black Lexus SUV and put in a van by several armed and masked officers in camouflage.
