The Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew spoke about the historical relevance of the Caribbean Community. The leader made his remarks during the opening ceremony for the 50th regular meeting of the Heads of the Government of CARICOM.
In his address, Prime Minister spoke about the various achievements that the region has clocked in, with the support from the whole region. He highlighted the impact of collective action through CARICOM.
He said that the region has contributed significantly to the growth of the world through their collective action. Much of these contributions come from the creative industries, like music, dance. The region has also given several intellectually gifted individuals to the world.
In light of this, the current chairperson of the CARICOM asserted that, “A world without CARICOM would be culturally poorer, intellectually diminished and spiritually less vibrant.”
Emphasizing his point further, Dr Terrance Drew added that the world would certainly not be the same without the Caribbean Community. The leaders have shared that the CARICOM has been telling the story of resilience.
The Prime Minister discussed the region’s cultural, intellectual, and political contributions. Dr Drew highlighted that the region has given the world a unique music, spiritual movements and revolutionary struggles for freedom.
Dr Drew also said that several scholars and leaders from the region have been respected and honored internationally. The Chairperson also spoke of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, which led to the creation of the Caribbean Community.
He asserted that the creation of the regional organization was neither accidental nor causal. He added that the treaty was not just a legal framework. It was the declaration of the confidence of their leaders in the unity of the region.
The value of the organization is more than just symbolic, and the region has led to many benefits for the small island nations that the region is made up of. As a unit, the region has achieved significant growth and created regional institutions and mechanisms which make the lives of the people in the region much easier.
Saying this, he pointed out some of the organizations that the CARICOM has created in the last several decades, including CARPHA, CSEC, CDB and RSS.
By themselves, many small island nations may not have achieved what they had achieved with the help of regional solidarity.
