Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew addressed the regional leaders at the opening ceremony for the 77th Regular Meeting of the Other Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The meeting, which was hosted in St Vincent and the Grenadines, serves as a platform for the regional leaders to discuss the issues of importance.
He highlighted that it is important for the regional leaders to work together and take the region forward in terms of development. The Prime Minister called on the leaders to promote inter regional trade and highlighted that it will help in promoting unity in the region.
The Prime Minister said that the cooperation within the region is extremely important in light of today’s region global, social, and geopolitical challenges. In his address during the opening ceremony for the event, the Prime Minister highlighted he importance of regional unity and how the OECS setup has benefitted the member nations.
Talking about the stability of the EC Dollar as a currency, Dr Terrance Drew highlighted that the currency of the Eastern Caribbean, with a population of less than a Million, is stronger than several more powerful nations.
The Prime Minister that the unity of the region has helped and benefit the people in getting access to healthcare essentials like Insulin. Dr Drew was surprised to note that the former President of USA, Joseph Biden had to pass a legislation to make sure that people could afford Insulin.
In contrast, the people of the Eastern Caribbean do not feel this particular crisis as he nations have insulin free of cost. This, according to Dr Terrance Drew is also a result of the Eastern Caribbean States working together.
He highlighted that due to the united approach employed by the Eastern Caribbean, they are able to buy medicine in a bulk. This allows them to procure essential supplies at a significantly lower cost.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew has been serving as the Minister of Health in the government of St Kitts and Nevis for nearly three years. His commitment to the welfare of the people of his country was evident in his advocacy for unity in the region as it will inadvertently help in improving the standard of living for the whole region.
