The twin-island Federation of St Kitts and Nevis has announced discounted VAT days for two days for the month of August 2024. According to the reports, the citizens can enjoy the benefit of about 5% off on the Value Added Tax (VAT).

The Government of St Kitts and Nevis shared updates on their official social media handle to remind the public to avail benefits and take advantages of the discount on certain things.

The Value Added Tax (VAT) Rate Days are released under the ‘Back-to-School Discounted VAT Rate Days.’ For these two days, lower VAT standard rates will be charged to the customers and businesses.

As per the information shared by the authority, eligible tangible items that are subject to 17% VAT presently, will qualify for the discount on the Discounted VAT Rate Days with the reduce in the interest down to 5%.

The authorities made an announcement to highlight the application deadline for the discounted VAT Rate Days, that is August 12, 2024. Notably, the list of taxpayers registered that will participate in the discount will be announced on August 24, 2024.

As certain items are subjected to the VAT relief, there are some exceptions introduced too. These exceptions include:

  • Vehicles
  • Guns
  • Ammunition
  • Cigarettes

Alcohol beverages such as Wine, Brandy, Vodka, Whisky, Gin, Rum, Liqueurs, Cordials, Beer, Gunness, Royal Stout, Shandy Carib, and Smirnoff ice are also exempted.

The St Kitts and Nevis Island Revenue Department noted that, “non-tangible items such as the Supply of Professional Services will continue to be a subject to the 17% VAT Rate.”

The list of non-exceptions is announced considering the remarks of the Revenue Department. The list of items includes:

  • Rent
  • Legal Fees
  • Restaurant Supplies
  • Top-Ups
  • Phone Cards
  • Tickets for the Game of Chance (Lottery/Raffles)

The Government is encouraging the businesses and customers to actively participate in these Discounted VAT Rate Days, that fosters the economic activity of the nation.

Additionally, the Christmas Discounted VAT Rate Days are also announced on December 13 and 21, 2024. Vehicle sales will also be included for the December Discounted VAT Rate Days.

Moreover, citizens can also benefit from the upcoming temporary concessions on school supplies and air-cooling devices from July 1 to September 30, 2024.

These initiatives taken by the Government of St Kitts and Nevis provide financial relief to all the citizens, also boosting the economic activity amid ongoing global inflation. This also underscores the commitment towards fostering a supportive economic environment.
