The Government of St Kitts and Nevis signed a contract with the Republic of China (Taiwan) to signal the launch of Phase II of the Solid Waste Management and Recycling Project.
The signing ceremony of this contract took place on July 31, 2024 and was held at the St Kitts Marriott Resort.
The Phase II of this significant project is being funded by the International Conservation Development Fund (IDFC) and implemented by the Department of Environment and the Taiwan Technical Mission.
The Solid Waste Management and Recycling Project primarily aims to reduce waste and promote a healthy environment.
Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, et al., Dr Joyelle Clarke shared update on her official social media and stated that, “It marks a significant step as we collectively continue to transition our Federation under the Sustainable Island State Agenda.”
She also noted that the expansion of this project is a clear signal that the Government is committed actualize a sustainable St Kitts and Nevis and requires them to shift into a higher gear.
Minister Clarke mentioned that the first phase of the project marked only the beginning and that they will intensify their efforts and execution strategies.
In addition to this, the government is hoping to introduce a paper recycling system, establish a standard operating procedure for government collection, upgrading equipment at the recycling plants on both islands and strengthen strategic planning and public awareness.
The Minister of Environment also highlighted her positivity towards the project and noted, “I am optimistic for the future of this project and eager to commence operation as we work towards a Sustainable Island State.”
Notably, the first phase of the project was implemented in July 2021 and was also funded by International Conservation Development Fund (IDFC) and was executed by the Taiwan Technical Mission and the Department of Environment.
The first phase looked upon the issues of plastic bottles and metal cans while reducing the plastic waste in the Federation as well as cultivating positive environmental practices.
Considerably, the second phase of the project aims to expand the recycling initiative by targeting cardboard waste, strengthen public awareness, assist in establishing a standard waste collection mechanism and reduce waste through planning and effective policies over the period of three years from 2024 to 2027.
Minister Joyelle Clarke also expressed her sincere thanks to the Ambassador Michael Lin and the Government of China (Taiwan) for their support to the island nation.
She further mentioned how the Phase I was a success and that she hopes for the next phase to be highly successful with St Kitts and Nevis progressing towards its goal to achieve the Sustainable Island State Agenda by 2030.
