Dr Terrance Drew, Prime Minister and Minister of National Security of St Kitts And Nevis, stated at his most recent press conference on November 7, 2023, that the Department of St Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services (SKNFRS) is restructuring several essential areas, including human resource development and an audit to ascertain the equipment the department needs.
Dr Terrance Drew highlighted that the department’s unskilled officers will receive training to tackle any situation swiftly.
“As you are aware, we are restructuring the fire department concerning the situation involving the fire tenders. This is the responsibility of the federal government, so one of the things which was done in terms of human resource development was that that we have appointed several firefighters, I believe we have about 15 of them, so they can bring order and structuring, which is a very, very vital aspect of the ministry.” Quoted from PM Drew.
PM Drew added that upon their arrival, they were welcomed by the somewhat disorganised Fire Department because there were individuals calling themselves firefighters but never received any training.
“We encountered experienced firefighters who could not be appointed due to political reasons, and we also encountered individuals who were receiving promotions above their more qualified counterparts in the fire service.” Said PM Drew
In Addition, PM Drew mentioned that the SKNFRS is conducting an inventory to determine the required equipment.
Prime Minister Dr Drew highlighted that the other thing they will be doing is an inventory of what is needed. For example, one of the significant things coming as a capital project is dealing with the equipment that is present at the fire department and is easily accessible.
